Theragun PRO: Is This Percussive Massage Gun Worth It?

A close-up view of a theragun massage device, showcasing its sleek design and distinctive red and black color scheme, resting on a dark surface.

Theragun, now Therabody, revamped their product lines and introduced new and updated massage guns in May 2020. In this article, we told you about the Theragun Mini, which is the company’s first mini massage gun and was introduced along with the company’s 4th generation massagers. The Theragun PRO is on the highest end. For this review we picked the (RED) edition.

WHAT IS IN THE BOX

A collection of massage therapy equipment featuring a portable, handheld percussive therapy device (theragun) with various interchangeable heads, a battery, a charger, and a carrying case.

The Theragun PRO comes in a big box, which makes sense given all the goodies that are included.

  • The Theragun PRO itself.
  • A protective carrying case, which is robust and well made.
  • 6 attachments within a travel pouch:
    • The Supersoft™ attachement for sensitive or sore areas, and areas near the bones or joints.
    • The Dampener attachment, used mostly for tender or bony areas. Therabody recommends it for overall use.
    • The Standard Ball attachment, which is great for overall use on large and small muscle groups.
    • The wedge attachment, perfect for shoulder blades and IT bands. According to the Therabody website, this attachment “provides the ability to be used for ‘scraping’ and ‘flushing’ movements to help increase blood flow and reduce tension where you need it the most.”
    • The Thumb attachment, which is used mostly for trigger points and lower back.
    • The cone attachment, perfect for pinpoint muscle treatment, including the hands and feet.
  • 2 rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.
  • 1 lithium-ion battery charger.

HOW TO USE THE THERAGUN PRO

The Theragun PRO is not difficult to operate. After the lithium-ion battery has been inserted in the PRO, press the center button for 2 seconds on the button pad, and you are ready to treat yourself. The plus (+) and minus (-) buttons increase or decrease the speed while the left (<) and right (>) arrows toggle between the Theragun PRO’s preloaded treatment presets. To turn off the Theragun PRO, press and hold the center button until the device shuts down.

The arm of the Theragun PRO can be adjusted to 4 positions. To adjust it, push the button on the underside of the device and move the arm to your desired position.

To change attachments, align the attachment that you would like to use with the tip of the rotating arm and push to connect until you hear a click. To remove the attachment, grip it, placing 1 finger on each side of the plastic connector, and pull off.

THE CONS

The Theragun PRO is not a perfect massager, which means that it does come with pros and cons. Let’s start with the cons.

  • Two words: two big. The Theragun PRO is the biggest massager that I have gotten my hands on so far. Plus, everything that it comes with cannot fit in the carrying case unless you remove the protective foam, making the entire case heavier than it already is. So, to take your Theragun Pro with you on a trip, for instance, you will have to sacrifice on what stays behind.
  • Noise. The 4th generation Theraguns are definitely quieter than than the previous generations, indeed, but they are still too loud to have a conversation going while they are operating. This is the case for the Theragun PRO too. It is true that the new motor, QX150 Motor with QuietForce Technology™, is more powerful. So, with such power power, quietness is going to be sacrificed a little.
  • The power button is one of the weirdest ones that I have seen on any massage gun that I have set my hands on. This is not too much of a con, but it is worth mentioning. Plus, once pressed, the Theragun PRO starts at the highest level, speed 2400 percussions per minute (PPM).
  • Cost. I set it in the cons though it is more of a subjective point depending on where you currently stand in your life. Theraguns are designed for a specific customer in mind, and it is not the average Joe and Jane. So, obviously, the average Joe and Jane would find these massagers expensive. Theabody does offer a payment plan option to make it more affordable to the general population, indeed.

THE PROS

What I rave about the Theragun PRO:

  • Ergonomic design that feels great in the hand. This also lets you hold the massager in different angles and positions, which lets you work on any part of your body and on your own.
  • Each head attachment provides a different treatment, and you get to choose or decide the one(s) that you love best and might stick to or use more.
  • The head attachments material. Each attachment is made of easy-to-clean cell foam. This is great because you definitely won’t bruise your skin as you massage yourself and apply more pressure on the massager.
  • The (RED) edition. With their partnership with (RED), Therabody donates 2% of the purchase price from every (PRODUCT)RED Theragun to the Global Fund to support the fight against two pandemics: AIDS and COVID-19.

HOW MUCH AND WHERE TO BUY

The Theragun PRO come with the price tag of $599USD and you can buy the Theragun PRO on the Therabody website definitely. They also have an Amazon store, which you ca access here*.

OUR THOUGHTS

The Theragun PRO is definitely a high-end percussive therapy massager. It comes well packaged and loaded with amazing features, and a premium feel. Therabody value quality and you can see it in their products and definitely in this one.

Is the Theragun PRO worth the money? Honestly, it is, especially if this is a product that you are going to use regularly. According to Thumbtack, the national average cost of a massage is 100USD per session. Not to put massage therapists out of work, but a Theragun PRO is technically 6 massage sessions if you look at it that way.

This 4th generation of Theragun PRO is definitely quieter than the previous generations, but it still too loud for my taste. One can only hope that the futures generation will be quieter. But do keep in mind that a quieter massage gun might also mean a less powerful motor, turning it from a percussive therapy massager (longer amplitude, lower PPM’s) to a vibrational therapy one (lower amplitude, higher RPM’s). My final word is that Therabody does deliver on their promise with the Theragun PRO, and despite it being still a little loud, the Theragun PRO is the best percussive massage gun to date. Key word: percussive.
